Actress. Born Drew Blythe Barrymore, on February 22, 1975, in Los Angeles,California. The daughter of actor John Drew Barrymore Jr. and Ildiko Jaid, Barrymore’s great-grandparents were actors Maurice Barrymore and Georgiana Drew, and her grandparents were actors John Barrymore and Dolores Costello. The director Steven Spielberg is her godfather.
Drew Barrymore had her first acting experience less than a year into her life when she appeared in a commercial for dog food. Blessed with an overactive imagination and a love of dressing up, Barrymore further pursued the acting craft by playing a toddler in the 1978 TV movie, Suddenly, Love and gaining her film credit in the 1980 sci-fi flick, Altered States. During an audition for the lead role in Poltergeist, her godfather Steven Spielberg didn’t feel she was a good match for the part. Instead, he chose her for his next film, 1982′s E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, where she played Gertie, the girl who teaches English to a visiting alien using the wonders of Sesame Street.
